The term &#8220;travel&#8221; may originate from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_French\">Old French<\/a>&nbsp;word&nbsp;<em>travail<\/em>, which means &#8216;work&#8217;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travel#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;According to the Merriam <span id=\"urn:enhancement-97d7c712\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"\">Webster dictionary<\/span>, the first known use of the word&nbsp;<em>travel<\/em>&nbsp;was in the 14th century. It also states that the word comes from Middle English&nbsp;<em>travailen<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>travelen<\/em>&nbsp;(which means to torment, labor, strive, journey) and earlier from Old French&nbsp;<em>travailler<\/em>&nbsp;(which means to work strenuously, toil). In English we still occasionally use the words &#8220;travail&#8221;, which means struggle. According to Simon Winchester in his book&nbsp;<em>The Best Travelers&#8217; Tales (2004)<\/em>, the words &#8220;travel&#8221; and &#8220;travail&#8221; both share an even more ancient root: a Roman instrument of torture called the&nbsp;<em>tripalium<\/em>&nbsp;(in Latin it means &#8220;three stakes&#8221;, as in to impale). This link may reflect the extreme difficulty of travel in ancient times. Travel in modern times may or may not be much easier depending upon the destination. Travel to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Everest\">Mount Everest<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amazon_rainforest\">Amazon rainforest<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_tourism\">extreme tourism<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adventure_travel\">adventure travel<\/a>&nbsp;are more difficult forms of travel. Travel can also be more difficult depending on the method of travel, such as by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bus\">bus<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cruise_ship\">cruise ship<\/a>, or even by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bullock_cart\">bullock cart<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travel#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>travel<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The origin of the word &#8220;travel&#8221; is most likely lost to history.
